What Does a Carbon Sulfur (CS) Analyzer Measure?

A Carbon Sulfur (CS) analyzer measures total carbon and sulfur content in metals, ores, cements and inorganic materials by high-temperature combustion and infrared detection. Labvance by Apex supplies CS analyzers alongside OHN analyzers and GC-MS systems for laboratories in Oman and the region.

How it works

The sample is combusted in an oxygen stream at high temperature (typically in a resistance or induction furnace). Carbon converts to CO₂ and sulfur to SO₂; the gases are swept through infrared detection cells that quantify each element. Results are reported as percentages or ppm within minutes.

Where CS analyzers are used

  • Steel and metallurgy — carbon determines grade and hardness; sulfur is controlled for brittleness
  • Cement and minerals — process control in clinker and raw meal
  • Mining and ores — grade control and trade assays
  • Environmental and materials laboratories

Choosing an analyzer

Look at measurable range (ppm to percent), sample mass handling, combustion method for your matrix, automation level, calibration standards compliance, and local service support. Labvance by Apex supplies and supports CS analyzers from Muscat with full specification guidance.

Direct answers

What is the difference between a CS analyzer and an OHN analyzer?

A CS analyzer measures carbon and sulfur by high-temperature combustion; an OHN analyzer measures oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen by inert-gas fusion. Together they give full elemental coverage for metals and inorganic materials — Labvance by Apex supplies both.

What sample types can a CS analyzer test?

Metals, ores, slags, cements, soils and ceramics — typically milligram-to-gram samples combusted in an oxygen stream with infrared detection of CO₂ and SO₂.
